Long Term Volunteer Opportunities

Are you ready for a life changing experience in a new culture? Do you enjoying serving others and being challenged in your walk with God? Then this may be the opportunity for you! We need field coordinators to serve on a long-term basis as a vital link between teams, HOM organization and the mission field in Haiti. These long-term (LT) volunteers will help meet the practical needs of teams and serve as liaison between HOM board members and MICECC staff. LT volunteers, under the guidance of the MICECC leaders, work with teams, housing and facilities construction and vocational programs. Other responsibilities are assigned depending on ability and/or interest.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Physically, emotionally and mentally fit: a medical release from a primary care provider required
  • Strong faith: sponsorship from home church or a Christian organization required
  • College education preferred; additional training for missions is a plus!
  • Good computer skills desirable; timely correspondence/reports are expected
  • Practical experience in planning and implementing mission projects
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate cross-culturally
  • Able to work as part of a team and independently
  • Must be resourceful, highly adaptable and able to work with different cultures and work ethics

HOM is an evangelical Christian ministry; we welcome people of all faiths to work to the glory of God. We recognize and respect individual differences; however, LT volunteers are representatives of the ministry in the Haitian community. They are to reflect God’s grace in all that they do, be culturally sensitive, proactive in effort and positive in attitude.

Although we try to utilize each volunteer’s unique skills and talents – they must be team players and may perform tasks or assume responsibilities outside of their chosen field or interest.  Communal living is a challenge and requires individuals to subordinate themselves to the greater good and accept the standards and discipline of the group. For individuals who are committed to being part of an – all for one and one for all – mission experience,  then being at work in Haiti will be life changing and rewarding.

Requirements

All candidates for LT volunteer positions must submit a statement of faith and be supported in their decision by their home church or a Christian organization. References from previous work or volunteer positions are required. Candidates must be physically and mentally fit; they must submit a letter from their health care provider attesting to their physical and mental health status. Candidates are to complete a series of essays designed to provoke thought and facilitate dialogue. Once these steps are complete, the candidate will meet with a HOM representative for an interview. Additional information or training may be required.

Cost: $1,200.00 deposit for room and board, $600 refunded at the end of the probation period (typically 1 month); the remaining funds will be refunded at the end of the service period. After 6 months of service, HOM provides one round-trip airfare to all LT Volunteers who commit to serve for 8 months or longer.

Lodging and meals: All LT volunteers share a dorm style room and bath with another staff member. Meals are communal – breakfast and dinner provided.  A rice and beans lunch is available while school is in session; grocery stores are convenient to purchase additional food and personal items.

Contact: Ben Mitcham to begin the application process. Submit name and contact information, include a brief statement of faith and previous experience or qualifications.
