Vacation Bible School

There is a great need throughout the month of July for teams to host a week-long VBS at one of our churches. Bring the Bible to life through skits, storytelling, crafts, scripture memory, and song. If you love spending time with kids and want to spread the Gospel to the children of Haiti - this is for you!

VBS is open to all children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old in our communities. Teams will minister to 200 or more children during the 1/2 day VBS session. We recommend setting up stations for each activity with a leader, an assistant (or two), and a translator for each station. The children, divided by age groups, can rotate through the different stations. Suggested stations include bible story, scripture memorization, crafts, music, games and lunch. A typical schedule is outlined below but teams are welcome to organize the day in a manner that works best for them.

SNACK/LUNCH – We strive to prepare a nutritious meal for each student – for many, this may be the only meal they get for the day. Donations are appreciated to offset the cost of the meal.

LESSONS – Teams are strongly encouraged to use the VBC curriculum theme provided by our VBS coordinator to ensure continuity among the campuses and students. Team may choose how best to present the lesson – the use of puppets, costumes and other visual aids are always well received. This is an example of a recent VBS theme and goals:

  • Scripture: Genesis Ch. 1 – 3 and Matthew 5: 13-16
    • Subject: the beauty of nature and role of light
      • Goal 1: Help children discover the beauty of nature before sin.
      • Goal 2: Help children understand the responsibility of man and woman through creation.
      • Goal 3: Sensitize children to protect the environment.
      • Goal 4: Help children understand they are the light of the world

CRAFTS – HOM recommends “useful” crafts – T-Shirts, bags, water bottles, visors etc. or crafts that can be used in music or in games and activities.

MUSIC – Praise and worship God through music! Children love to sing and make a “joyful noise” with simple instruments made with everyday objects. Your translator can lead in simple songs that are universally recognized in any language – “Jesus loves me”, “This little light of mine”, Michael row your boat”. For fun, have the children teach you to sing in Creole!

GAMES/SPORTS – There are many activities that can be done with little or no equipment - relay games and obstacles courses, 3 legged race, bean bag toss, Duck Duck Goose, musical chairs, limbo – the possibilities are endless!
